Dayton Region Annual Fly-In

Mark your calendars April 27th and 28th
for the Annual Dayton Region Fly-In!
Since 1984, community leaders in the Dayton Region have gathered in Washington, D.C. to share with our Congressional delegation, Pentagon leaders, and government officials the importance of one of the Region’s most important assets:
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This year will mark the 26th Annual Dayton Region Fly-In and attendees will have the opportunity to discuss our regional priorities relating to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Springfield Air National Guard Base, and other federal issues related to the community.
Confirmed speakers include Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton A. Schwartz; Victoria Cox, Federal Aviation Administration’s Senior Vice President for Next Gen; Chief, National Guard Bureau, General Craig R. McKinley as well as his Director for the Air National Guard, Lieutenant General Harry M. Wyatt, III.  They, and others,  will address issues key to the Dayton Region’s strategic vision.  As in past years, we will hear from the members of our House and Senate Congressional delegation.

One new item being added to the itinerary this year is a visit to Silver Spring, Maryland, where strong community efforts helped to revitalize the downtown area. The group will talk to Silver Spring officials who were involved in the revitalization effort so that our community can learn from the success of this now thriving urban area.  The trip will include a walking tour of downtown Silver Spring.

Entrepreneurial Development—Zia Systems

Zia Systems Dayton, OH— The Dayton Development Coalition’s Entrepreneurial Signature Program (ESP), funded through the Ohio Third Frontier and local investors recently awarded an investment to Zia Systems, a Springfield, Ohio company located at Central State University’s NET Incubator at the Next Edge Technology Park.

Zia Systems has developed a real time location system using radio frequency identification (RFID) that will be used for tracking location,
temperature, and pressure data for sewer pipes. This technology will allow for accurate monitoring of damaged pipes, which is difficult to track without the costly expense of digging up large amounts of ground in order to cure the sewer pipes.
The investment from the ESP will assist the company with modifying prototypes, testing, and enhancing the tracking software. Christina Howard, Vice President for Entrepreneurial Development said “Zia’s technology has a great value to local governments and the construction industry, especially with the announcement from the federal government to concentrate on sewer renewal and dedicated funds from the stimulus package.” Christina added that the ESP investment has spurred an additional investment in the company from a private investor.

The Dayton Development Coalition’s Entrepreneurial Signature Program, funded through the Ohio Third Frontier and local investors assists start-up companies, entrepreneurs, and existing technology-based companies to develop and commercialize new technologies. ESP focuses on attracting and growing companies in the “Signature” areas of composites, nanomaterials, and sensor applications as well as companies with cross-cutting technologies, such as information technology, and other advanced materials.

The Entrepreneurial Signature Program (ESP) is one of many Ohio Third Frontier initiatives that is making a difference across the state.  Since its November 2007 inception, the Dayton Region ESP has had substantial results:

Site Selection Magazine Awards Dayton MSA

http://www.siteselection.com

For the second consecutive year, the Dayton MSA has been recognized nationally by Site Selection Magazine as a top-performing metropolitan and honored with the number one rank for the 2009 medium size metro award, a category that evaluated corporate growth and expansion of metropolitans nation-wide with populations 200,000 to 1 million.

Furthermore, Ohio was awarded the 2009 Governor’s Cup Award for the fourth consecutive year and fifth in seven years for leading 503 economic development projects, the most in the nation.

Marty Hohenberger, Vice President of Business Development for the Coalition commented “2009 was a very successful year for the Dayton Region to lead so many deals given the economic conditions and it emphasizes that our strategies for the Region and our strategic partnerships are working.” He added that the 46 economic development projects Dayton led in 2009 “were undoubtedly a huge accomplishment, but the real impact was the 1500 jobs it created for the Region.”

The Coalition was a fundamental collaborator in several of the projects that contributed to the award. One major win was the Caterpillar Logistics project that gained 500 jobs in the community and its plans to build a $1.5 million square foot warehouse in the Clayton Commerce Park. Another key project was the announcement by CodeBlue, a division of the Wisconsin-based Insurance Claim Management, to expand its operations in Springfield, Ohio and create a projected 300 jobs over the next five years.  Hohenberger notes that collaborations from partners like Montgomery County, the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, and the Ohio Department of Development along with the Shovel Ready Program were able to make these deals possible.

“This recognition is also a testimony to the tremendous assets the Region has,” said Jim Leftwich, President and CEO, Dayton Development Coalition.  “From the intellectual capital and research and development at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to our extensive manufacturing base, from a skilled workforce to unmatched water resources; the Region has a lot to offer and businesses are clearly listening.”

California Investment Mission

In partnership with the Ohio Business Development Coalition (OBDC), the Dayton Development Coalition and 12 other OBDC partners traveled to California for a targeted business recruitment mission. Thirteen recruitment meetings were conducted in the San Francisco and Los Angeles metropolitan areas with a number of capital investment projects indentified.

Ed Burghard, Executive Director, OBDC noted that he was “very impressed with the collaboration and unflagging focus on delivering results.” He added that there was a 54% conversion rate of meetings to projects resulting from this trip.

Ohio will be actively pursuing projects in the California area and will be traveling to Toronto in April and other cities for recruitment opportunities.

Israeli Mission Trip—February 2010

As a result of a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Haifa, Israel, and the Dayton Region, officials arranged a visit to Israel to leverage economic development opportunities in the area of aerospace technology.

Representatives from the City of Dayton, Montgomery County, the Dayton Development Coalition, and Wright State University Research Institute spent six days in Israel, splitting their time between Haifa and Tel Aviv.

Primary goals of the group were to: establish a Dayton economic development office in Haifa, renew developing relationships within the aerospace industry, and establish relationships in the bio-medical industry. Goals were successfully met, beginning with a gracious donation of an office from the Haifa Development Coalition and a final candidate recommendation by the group of Dayton Region representatives this candidate will serve as the liaison between Israel and the Dayton Region. Additionally, representatives met with several top Israeli aerospace President/and bio-technology companies which Joe Zeis, Vice Chief Strategist for the Dayton Development Coalition, noted are looking forward to doing business with the Dayton Region.

The program series is targeted toward educating our regional business community about sustainability options and business opportunities in the energy field.

The next Energy Roundtable on May 5, 2010 from 9am-4pm at the Miamisburg Mound will focus on Energy Efficiency and include presentations from national and regional speakers.  Registration for the event is $20 and will include lunch.
